1966 Ford Galaxie 500

With 429ci Big Block!

"Wait a minute," you're wondering. "Ford didn't put a 429 in a Galaxie in 1966!"

Well, you're right, they didn't. They put in 427s and 428s, but the 429 wouldn't come around until 1969. The 429 in this Galaxie is from 1971, and came out of a very low-mileage Thunderbird that was beautiful except for the completely rotted body. The world's loss was the Galaxie's gain!

Stock horsepower for the engine was conservatively rated by Ford at 325. This engine is the last of the high-compression motors prior to the smog-choked dogs to come out in 1972. With less than 30K miles on the motor, it only required a bit of freshening up with a brand new distributor equipped with a Pertronix ignition module, Edelbrock Performer 460 manifold,a brand new Speed Demon 850cfm carburator plus some genuine Ford chrome valve-covers and air-cleaner.

The engine ran nicely before, but after punching it up with the above, exiting into custom 3-inch ceramic-coated headers, down the 3-inch exhaust pipes through to 2-chamber Flowmasters, it not only sounds incredible, it really kicks serious ass! Even though this is a full-size 60's car, it can break the massive tires out back for an incredible 100ft screeching, smoking burnout! Nothing says TORQUE like a Ford Big Block!

Did I mention how sweet the sound of 429 cubic inches is, burbling through that exhaust?

All that power is delivered to a brand-new set of 275/60/15 BF Goodrich T/As out back with 235/75/15s up front, wrapped around a set of American Racing Chrome Reverse wheels that really give the Galaxie a classic "Rat Rod" look!

(P.S. the "marks" you see are just dirt. I didn't bother washing the car before taking the photos. I'd rather drive.)

Speaking of that classic look, the Galaxie went into the body shop this past spring and was done up in a very mean looking flat black paint job, just like the old hot rods. But just because flat black is cheap doesn't mean this was some quick paint job! There was extensive metal work done on the quarters and other parts to get rid of bondo and make the panels straight. At the same time much of the trim was shaved for a smoother look.

When I got this car I knew it would never end up in a magazine, all shiny and pretty. The chrome is pitted, the interior is ripped up or missing in places, and it's very light on creature comforts. I wanted a car I could drive, and drive hard. So instead of making it pretty, I worked on all the mechanicals. The following things are all NEW in the past year or so:

  • 1971 429ci Engine
  • Barry Grant Speed Demon 850cfm carb
  • Pertronix electronic ignition
  • Taylor plug wires
  • Real Ford valve covers and air cleaner
  • Entire exhaust system from the headers to the tail pipes
  • Aluminum race radiator
  • C6 Transmission, FRESH rebuild
  • B&M Transmission cooler
  • Transmission lines
  • Driveshaft
  • Front Springs
  • Rear Springs
  • Front Shocks
  • Heater core and hoses
  • Power steering pump and hoses
  • 4-wheel brakes, including brake lines
  • Wheels and Tires all around
  • B&M Megashifter in console
  • Grant 4-spoke wheel
  • Optima Yellow drycell battery
  • So you can see, all the major mechanical work has been done, and even some of the cosmetics. However, this car is nearly 40 years old so naturally it's far from perfect! There's a bit of surface rust on the floors, it creaks and rattles, and the gas gauge doesn't work. However, she always starts and hasn't ever stranded me by the side of the road!

I will be the first to admit the interior leaves a lot to be desired. Both the driver and passenger seats are ripped, there's no headliner, no trim over the back pillars and the dashpad is a mess. But I did put new carpet in and quite a bit of sound deadening, so it's actually quite comfortable to drive around in. I drive it daily during the summer with no problems - the windows all roll down, the heater blows hot air for cool nights and even the turn signal cancel works! Amazing! What more do you need? If you want luxury, buy a Caddy! Remember, she ain't pretty but she goes like stink!

One thing I didn't mention is the stereo system I've installed. This is because it's not included in this sale and will be pulled out of the car before I sell it - to be quite honest, I can get more money for it if I sell it piece by piece. But if you're interested, here's the details:

  • 429 Engine
  • Hifonics Zeus Z700
  • Dynaudio System 240MKII 2-way set (MW 160 7“ Mid-bass and MD 100 1.1" “soft dome tweeter)
  • 2 X250 passive crossovers
  • JL Audio 10W3-D4 10" Bass speaker in sealed box
  • SonicBLUE RioCar 24MB hard drive-based MP3 player
  • Lightning Audio PD4 and GD4 Power distribution fuse blocks
  • 1 Farad Capacitor with integrated volt meter
  • If you think you'd actually like the stereo - and you should, it totally kicks ass - I'll include it for $1,000. Keep in mind that it's over $4,000 worth of equipment!

I've spent over $10,000 on this car since I bought it, and from the description I hope you can see I really like this car, so you might be wondering why I'm selling it. Well, frankly, I need the money - I'm starting a new business venture and I can't afford to keep "luxury" items like the Galaxie. It breaks my heart but that's life.

If you'd like to see the car prior to bidding, it's located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Just drop me an email to make arrangements to see it. We can go out and do some screaming burnouts!

Given that it's an old car, it's being sold AS-IS. You're welcome to drive it home if you buy it - I'm confident you'll have no issues since I drive it all over the place - and I'm happy to help with temporary plates and whatnot. However, I won't do shipping - if you want it, U-Haul rents cheap car trailers - that's how I got it in the first place! There's no duty when you bring US-made goods, like this fine car, back over the border, so American buyers are welcome!

I won't accept Paypal as payment, as the fees would kill me. Money orders, certified cheques or cash when you pick it up are the only payment methods I accept. I will accept a small $100 deposit via Paypal though, when you win the auction.

Any questions, let me know! Thanks!
